So, finally got a set of cam bolts, was all ready to finish assembly on our motor, and discovered...
Everyone who's human, raise their hand!
People who know me are well aware I never claim to be perfect. Well, I came in today to finish assembly on the motor for the '92 Camaro, and when I went to install the timing set (got a set of cam retainer bolts while I was home for Christmas) and found out the timing set I have wouldn't work.
Ends up, our ZZ4 roller cam has an LT1 style nose, which means it takes an LT1 style cam sprocket. DOH! As you can see in the picture, the cam in our motor has a stepped noes like an LT1. If I remember right, this had something to do with the cam-driven water pump setup the LT1s used. A standard Gen I small block has a flat face on the front of the cam.
Out of four small block timing sets I've got in my parts stash, none of them are LT1 style. So, our motor assembly goes back on hold until I get the correct timing set in. I feel like a twit for making this mistake, but if this is the worst thing to happen for putting a motor together, I'm more than happy to deal with it!
Hope everyone had a good Christmas!
