Chambered Music

Symphony For A Camaro

It had been forever since i'd driven a first-gen Camaro with the infamous chambered exhaust system. I was down in the Super Chevy Tampa Headquarters. The mission was to do a story on Classic Automotive Restoration Specialties continuation-series Yenko Camaro. If you're not familiar with the breed, CARS starts with a Dynacorn '69 Camaro coupe body and builds a rather faithful reproduction of what Don Yenko & Co. was selling out of his Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, Chevy dealership back in 1969. Power comes from a GM Performance Parts 427 crate engine, which is backed by a sweet-shifting M21 4-speed and a 12-bolt housing 4.10:1 gears. The underpinnings and interior are all circa 1969 Chevrolet so the driving experience is strictly 1969, right down to the reproduction bias-ply tires. It feels oh-so-authentic.

True, the power felt great and the Hurtst-shifted M21 was perfection. Check out the video clips our our drag test on our home page. It's like my right arm's barely moving. But for my money, nothing was finer than the sound of chambered exhaust. The engine was breathing through a set of Doug's long-tube headers into the chambered exhaust and the result was magical. Loud and masculine, but not obnoxious. I wonder if GM could legally sell something like this on the fifth-gen Camaro. You'll be able to read all about our road test of this fine automobile in an upcoming issue, but like we said, you can see video from that day now in the Video section of our home page. Enjoy.
