Few times has an American automobile been known to be the fastest production car on the planet. Duesenberg set it in 1932 with a blistering 135 mph pass. Carroll Shelby’s 427 AC Cobra took the honor in 1965 at 163 mph and the Ford GT40 went 167 in ’67. This list has seen some of the greatest cars of all time with names like Bentley, Cobra, Ferrari, and Duesenberg, Bugatti, and McLaren.
When Bugatti unveiled the Veyron, heads seemed to turn all over the world. It consists of an o-so-foreign W16 engine with quad turbos and all-wheel drive and cruises to 250 mph in a blink of an eye. It makes 1,001 hp and consists of millons of dollars of technology throughout. Their claim to fame is being known as the fastest production car of all time at 253.8 mph set in 2005 and people who have no idea what they are talking about, still believe this is true.
Contrary to popular belief, this is absolutely not true. A simple google search for “fastest production car” will yield you a result you probably are not aware of. On September 13th, 2007 The SSC Ultimate Aero TT cruised to a top speed of 256.18 mph on a closed off highway in Washington with Guinness World Record investigators standing by. Created by Shelby Supercars (no relation), this monster is powered by a small-block Chevy with twin-turbochargers and twin-intercoolers.
