How many of you guys have had the chance to autocross your Chevy? Man ,what a blast! Just a couple of weeks ago the Goodguys show came to Costa Mesa fairgrounds in OrangeCounty.
While at the fairgrounds they had set up an autocross course sponsored by Air Ride Technologies. Any one that had a car at the show was given the chance to run their vehicle and see what time it was capable of producing. Naturally some guy in a ZR1 Vette was kicking some serious tail section with his vehicle, but this ’88 IROC held it’s own.
Here are some times and drivers to compare.
Nick Licata the editor of Camaro Performers (even though he didn’t drive his own vehicle) ran the best time in the Detroit Speed & Engineering Camaro with a time of 17.658 seconds.
Steven Rupp (former associate editor of PHR, now on the staff of Camaro Performers) ran his super slick ’68 Camaro, dubbed the Bad Penny, 18.335 seconds.
John Barkley (one of our ad sales guys) ran his 72 Camaro a best time of 18.685 seconds
Lastly, I came in with a personal best time in my weakly powered 305 '88 IROC with a time of 19.798 seconds.
The suspension I currently run on my ’88 IROC is: Air Ride Technologies Ride Pro system on all four corners. Bilstein Shocks on all four corners and Hotchkis sway bars, subframe connectors, trailing arms and rear sway bars. Baer Brakes C-5 style brakes and Nitto NT 555 tires. That’s it. I plan on adding a few more things here and there to see what she can do, but not bad for a Camaro that most enthusiasts have dismissed in the annals of Camaro history.
