Unlike the "good old days" when you could go to a salvage yard and find a vareity of trashed performance cars, these days you find more late model junk and everyday driver stuff than anything. But, every once in a while, something shows up like a lost treasure to catch our attentions in a junkyard...
This past weekend I was at a local yard with my buddy Craig picking up parts for my '92 Camaro and '92 Silverado. Scored a near mint drivers' side t-top for the Camaro (the one on the car is cracked all to hell), two excellent shape front fuel lines, passenger side mirror, and wiper pulse board for the Silverado, all for about $35. The yard was ahving a 50% off sale for Memmorial Day!
Anyway, while walking the aisles, I came across this rusting hulk. From the color, it's either a '79 or '80 Z28. The hood was laying off to the side, and in pretty good shape, with only a little surface rust that could easily be cleaned away.
The vultures hadn't picked the car over yet. The 190HP 350 was complete and still in it, along with the TH350 trans, and out back the 8.5" 10-bolt was still in one piece, though it felt like the internals were junk.
This particular Camaro was actually a rare piece because of it's color. In '79, the light green color was only sprayed on 3,450 cars (lowest color choice for '79), or if it wa an '80, that means the color was the factory available Lime Green, of which only 1,258 were built, again the lowest number for the model year. Because of the bad fading in the Florida sun, it's tough to tell what color this used to be exactly, and we get to the data plate to confirm the year.
