Believe it or not, the horsepower wars continue to ravage on. This past weekend, I sweat off 8 or 10 pounds over at Island Dragway in Hackettstown, NJ (the hallowed ground of Don Garlits 200mph pass, and Ray Allen’s stomping yard with the LS-6 Chevelle). The NHRA Division 1 Open series played host an event that like many others around the country, stumbled on at half capacity. Rising gas prices and the spiraling economy have taken their toll the sport, but between the grey skies, a battle raged.
We brought our fleet of NHRA stockers down to the track, but not for some wussy bracket racing. No, we were there for some good ‘ol fashion heads up action; pro-tree style. We run two new classes created within Stock Eliminator called Top Stock and Jr Stock which lines up the fastest of the fast with no break-out and no dial-in on the window. Over the last three years, we have been running this, and let me tell you…it’s an absolute blast. Corvettes, ‘Cudas, Camaros, Mustangs, Shelbys, and everything in between makes up what time and time again has been a spectacular show. If you are into heads up style racing with combinations from the 60’s and 70’s, get to an NHRA Open event in Division 1,2, or 3.
