The work is finally done and Project Homewrecker, my 1972 Corvette, is finally back where it belongs—in my garage. Associate Editor Mike Ficacci and I drove to West Jersey this morning in a gorgeous 2008 Corvette convertible to pick her up. Here they are side-by-side in my friend Tom's driveway. No bears were spotted in the vicinity, but Ficacci's hands were still a little shaky at the sight of these two works of art.
I drove up to Tom's house and enjoyed the modern comfort and ridiculous performance of the Vette. On the way home, it was pure vintage fiberglass for me. What a contrast, but the family gene pool was evident. I lucked out with Homewrecker. It's straight, tight, and a great piece of Chevrolet history. The 383 under the hood feels superb and the Mid America Motorworks-rebuilt seats are remarkably comfortable. Only thing left to work on is the transmission, which doesn't like to be downshifted from third to second.
