I think we've all seen the recent news that GM is hemorrhaging money worse than a hemophiliac on blood thinners. What concerns me is, what affect is this gonna have on future Bowtie products? So, to help out, I've got a few suggestions that'll save our beloved perofrmance vehicles from the chopping block...
Gm's loss in the most recent quarter reported equals two Corvette Convertibles a minute. Even to a financial novice, that's bad. So that means the inevitable cost cutting is already happening, and combined with the severe gas crunch were in, that means more frivolous projects and vehicles are probably gonna be sacrificed. The high end Camaro, ZR1, Z06, Cobalt SS, and others come to mind right off the bat.
No I don't want to see these cars go, so it's time ot look at possible alternatives so Chevy/GM can start making more money. So, here are a few suggestions:
1. Time to kill the redundant and useless vehicles, particularly SUVs of all sizes. Look at how many small to mid-size SUVs GM makes. Is this really necessary?
2. Spin off Buick/GMC, Pontiac, Cadillac, and Saturn off into their own seperate companies. The other GM brands have no real identity anymore, and never will as long as they're under the world shadowing GM umbrella. Work out the agreements for GM to basically become a powertrain/parts supplier to the nwely independant divisons, but then let them operate as seperate companies with their own designers, management teams, and support mechanisms like it used to be when GM dominated the world car scene. Eliminate most of the bureaucracy that is one of the reasons why GM is bleeding cash, and keeping the company from producing an all around lineup of cars people want to buy.
3. Start desiging and producing cars that have good style and people want to buy. Outside of the Corvette and Camaro, I look at the GM lineup and see nothing that really tickles my fancy. It used to be from the bottom of the lineup to the top, every Chevrolet produced had it's own style and distinctiveness.
4. For the love of God, start designing sporty and attractive steering wheels! It used to be GM cars had some of the most style conscious and attractive steering wheels in the industry (My favorite is the '58-'60 Impala steering wheel). Now look at what they've got! The steering wheel is the part someone uses the most in a car otuside of the seat, so give the cusotmer something that makes them think they're driving a Corvette, even if they aren't!
That's four suggestions, I'm almost out of space in the blog here, so I'll let everyone look these over, and post some more later!
