2008: The Year Of The ’58

Where Have All These 50-Year-Old Chevys Come From?

We know that full-sized Chevys are all the rage. It says so right on the cover of the new Super Chevy, which has the Danchuk '57 and a righteous '61 on the cover. But since the first Super Chevy Show of the year, we've found that there is a resurgence in the popularity of the '58 Chevy. They seem to be everywhere. One one time the only place you saw them was on cable re-runs of "American Graffiti."

I saw more '58s at the Baton Rouge 2008 Super Chevy season opener than I did in all the events I went to in 2006 and 2007 combined. And every event I went to I saw more of them. Mike Harrington shot this gorgeous '58 for a feature and we have a one-of-a-kind '58 done up El Camino style for a feature in the January 2009 issue. (You can see video of its build-up under the videos section of superchevy.com.

So my question is: Why the sudden popularity of this once ignored model? Did everyone lose the keys to their '58s and just find them this year? Is it (to use a rock and roll term, "a lost classic?"
