Mary Pozzi, who handled the autocross portion of the 2008 Super Chevy magazine Suspension & Handling Challenge, showed few do it better when she wheeled this Camaro to a first-place finish at the Goodguys Del Mar Nationals Autocross in California on April 5.
Pozzi, of Salinas, California, won the Street Machine Class , her second straight podium finish at a Goodguys event, coming shortly after athe Goodguys Orange County Get Together one month earlier.

“We had a fantastic time being part of the action,” Pozzi said. “The Camaro is fast, reliable, and really a blast to drive and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This proves that a leaf spring car will run at the front of the pack with the right parts.” Pozzi, an ASE-Certified Master Mechanic by training and an insurance investigator by trade, drove the ’73 RS in the Goodguys Orange County Get Together autocross in March and was faster than everything else on the field save for a late model Corvette Z06 on race tires. One month later at Del Mar, Mary drove a series of fast runs culminating with a 30.22 second lap that eventually secured victory in the Street Machine class. She also set the unofficial fastest lap of the event with a 29.2 in Steven Rupp’s “Bad Penny” ’68 Camaro, but due to the car’s R-compound race tires the run was for exhibition only. Pozzi has been racing cars with her husband David – a racer and noted fabricator himself – for years. After racking up 11 SCCA Autocross National championships in a variety of different sports and muscle cars, the team decided to build a ’73 Rally Sport to use on the street, open track and autocross events. The car features a complete Hotchkis Sport Suspension Total Vehicle System (TVS), including front coil springs, rear leaf springs, sport sway bars and subframe connectors. Power comes from a GM Performance Parts Fast Burn 385, and the car rolls on Kumho Ecsta tires. “We couldn’t be happier about Mary’s victory, and we’re honored she not only chose Hotchkis Sport Suspension but allowed us to display her car in our booth,” said company founder John Hotchkis. “Mary and David are everything racers should be: friendly, outgoing, fun to hang out with and unbelievably good drivers. Mary’s victories in the last two Goodguys Autocross events prove that you don’t need to re-engineer a car to be a champion; high-quality bolt-on parts in a track-proven system work.”
