Word from GM today is that the much anticipated Chevy Volt will be rated at 230 miles per gallon in city driving based on a test system devised by the EPA and the automaker. It will be the first car to achieve triple-digit fuel economy in history.

The downside is that the car is expected to sell for between $40,000-$44,000. At that rate, it will take a 20 years for it to pay for itself. According to GM, it will cost 40 cents per day to charge the Volt to full capacity.
