When Doug Noce submitted his '79 Camaro for a possible photo shoot, we liked it enough to proceed. He sweetened the pot by asking if we'd like to shoot it where he works: The Surry Power Station in Virginia. Who wouldn't want to shoot a cool (original owner, no less) car at a nuclear power plant?
If you think going through airport security is tough, you don't want to know what you have to do to get on the grounds of a nuclear power plant! Let's just say associate editor Patrick Hill is still walking a little funny. Once behind the razor wire, we had security guards with us at all times—and we're not talking minimum wage mall security guards. These folks were sporting serious firepower. I was reluctant to scratch my nose.
Each photo sequence required security approval so as not to show something we wouldn't want America's enemies to see. By the end of the day, we had a fantastic shoot of a great car in an unusual location.
Special thanks to Doug and his associates for allowing us to see such an amazing place and for answering all 200 of our questions. Look for this feature in an upcoming issue of Super Chevy.
