Facing ever-increasing competition and probably smarting from having the Corvette ZR1 fitted with Michelin tires at the factory, Goodyear has unleased the second-generation of its Eagle F1 Supercar tire and Super Chevy was able to sample it at the world-famous Bondurant School of High Performance Driving outside Phoenix. Goodyear also announced that the Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 will be the original equipment tire on the 2011 ZO6 and Grand Sport. After driving school ZO6s fitted with both the old F1 and the G:2, we can state with confidence that a great performing sports car just got even better.
We'll have a full report (with track times) in an upcoming story (both for the magazine and this website), we can state emphatically that the G:2 is far superior than the old F1. The first time I took a corner with the G:2-equipped ZO6, I immediately noticed improved steering response and track-holding ability. My confidence in the car went up exponentially and I was soon taking corners at speeds that would have had the older tires begging for mercy—but the new G:2 weren't even breaking a sweat.
Bondurant instructors were posting times that were consistently 1.5-seconds per lap better with the new G:2s and some of the journalists were reportedly 3 second a lap faster. That's impressive stuff. Stay tuned for a full report.
